It is at the celebrating of the Supper that we most profoundly glorify God’s name. Consider the words of the Apostle John

The One who does not love does not know God, for God is love… We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in Him. 1 John 4:8, 16

As we receive the broken bread and the poured out wine, we should recognize the Lord’s Supper as a sacrament of God’s love. To meditate on this sacred food as we have been taught will lead us to an affection towards God, a remembrance of Christ, and a communion with the brethren as is proper at the sacramental feast. To gaze on this bread and wine is to realize that God is our Father who cares for the needs of His children. It is to recognize the providence of God and to truly perceive that our God is truly benevolent.

To those who have yet to be instructed by the gospel, neither nature, creation, nor providence speaks of love. All the wondrous works of God are worthless without the gospel. As sinners we could catch no sight of compassion or promise of pardon. All these belong to the innermost glory of the heart of God which is revealed by the Word – who is Christ. It is the mystery of the feast prepared for us that assures us of the ultimate benevolence of the eternal. That is to say – the manifestation to us that God is love is in God’s sending His Son. Here is the principal shining forth of the hidden glory of the Divine Nature.

At the Lord’s Supper, we see the bread and wine before us a sign and a promise of God’s benevolence. The bread and wine on the table prepared for us is not from a cold god, a naked power, or a brute force. It is a kindly force and a creative being. The wisdom from on high is nourishing. It is a loving wisdom, patiently waiting to be loved. The justice of God is not blind nor is it an unattainable ideal, but a full generous source of every blessing. It is a feast prepared for us.

It is in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper that we encounter the reality of God’s attributes. It is here that in this life we can appreciate God’s wisdom, power, justice, and patience. It is here we can begin to glorify His name. While the contemplation of nature is insufficient to assure us of God’s mercy and grace to sinners, or fully to instruct us concerning his benevolence, it is nevertheless true, that after we have learned these lessons at the cross, we may return to contemplate the works of infinite wisdom and power as the works of him who is also infinite love.

The sacrament makes evident the harmony of God’s attributes. The Eucharist glorifies God’s name, magnifies his attributes and manifests His true nature as nothing else in human experience. Here are the visible body and blood of Jesus. It is the nearest view, this side of heaven, into the majesty of divine perfection. Hence, to celebrate the Lord’s Supper is to enter into a fellowship of adoration, love, and praise.
